In 1854, the Americans had forced the Japanese to end their isolation and open up their shores to trade. The treaty prompted an influx of Japanese art into Europe-much of it in a restrained, natural style the Europeans had not seen before. Fish became a highly-regarded subject for artist to capture and enhance the Japanese style.

In 1928, Sabino created La Carpe in very limited edition. The chanteuse, Josephine Baker, and actor Maurice Chevalier, immediately joined the list of buyers.
